Digital Musings

This past month has been a mixed bag for me.

It all began with the deactivation of my Facebook account (insert I wasn’t banned I was on hiatus joke here).
During one of those days I was scrolling through YouTube’s recommended videos i saw a Breakfast Club video featuring Cal Newport.
The idea that this man expressed; that of how social media and FOMO was destroying how people interact with the world as we know it, was more than interesting to say the least. Keen on finding out more about what he was saying I found his ebook, “Digital Minimalism”, and began reading it.
The idea of digital well-being really appealed to me. I decided to give it a shot: I would deactivate my Facebook account and only post on social media (Instagram and Twitter) only on weekends for month –  it helped a lot.

I was able to reflect on some issues I had been avoiding for some time (work and relationship), the vacation I took at the end of the month helped as well.  Liberation is too strong of a word, it’s a though a fog has lifted from your eyes.
I reactivated my Facebook account last week to see what had i missed during my Facebook holiday, and frankly, I missed nothing.

I won’t be deleting my Facebook account though, there are some important groups that I’m a part of there – namely a group called Corneal Dystrophy Support group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/hopeforsight/).
What I will be doing is limiting my access to Facebook to the laptop only and of course decreasing the number of comments or posts I make there.
Hopefully this will help with the FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) anxiety that is inherent in the overuse of social media.

The rest of popular media has also caught onto the manner in which social media companies are intentionally seeking to make their users addicted to their apps. This is evidenced in the recently released episode of Black Mirror called, “Smithereens” that poorly explores the topic.
With that being said, I will redirect my energy elsewhere. Starting by updating my blog more often and trying out a new hobby  (to be revealed later).

On the next post:
Corneal Dystrophy (what is it?)
