With one mortality and a spike in the number of local transmissions it seems as though we are just beginning to climb the curve.
Much like the image depiction, Corona-Chan has most of us cowering in a corner trying to now catch or spread it.
When I say most…I’m referring to essential workers.
Because ordinary people seem to not give a flying hoot about the virus.
The mixed messages coming from the Ministry of Health and Cabinet isn’t helpful either.
A call for everyone having to wear masks in Publix transport was immediately retracted because people began to share masks. The copy paste tactic doesn’t always wrk for us because South Africa has different capabilities.
For us essential workers the pandemic has become real with the first mortality from the virus. This is causing upheavals within the healthcare worker community, because there are no provisions in place for workers at risk.
No risk allowance.
An outdated Compensation Act from 1983 meant for trauma patients.
A non competitive salary that has yet to be adjusted.
The risk of infecting family members who are high risk.
The path ahead looks steep and dangerous, but we will push on. Politicians are all showing what they value the most in these times: the lives of their citizens, or “economic growth” aka money.
