I’ll be undergoing Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) on my left eye tomorrow (21 February).
My corneal specialist is Dr L Coetzee of Sandton Eye Clinic (Johannesburg, South Africa).
Some background:
My initial diagnosis of corneal was in 2011 (even though I had been having corneal erosions since adolescence).
My visual acuity has gradually been deteriorating over the past decade, but sped up significantly from 2018.
Other than corneal erosions on both eyes, I would have episodes of dry eyes.
Last year October is when my vision became really bad.
I lost depth perception, developed recurrent headaches and could no longer drive.
There is no corneal specialist in my country (ESwatini), so I had to go to neighbouring South Africa to see one.
First appointment was in November, second appointment in January and we agreed on doing a corneal transplant (DALK) on my left eye.
Hopefully my transplant operation tomorrow will go smoothly and the transplant lasts me for many years ahead.
Current vision is
Left Eye 0.1
Right Eye 0.2
Pressures were fine last review and endothelial layer was good.
The plan is to do the other eye after 12 – 18 months (corneal dystrophy affects both eyes)
I’ll be posting regular updates.
Cheers.
