What then is a soulmate?
Does the power of the idea of a ”soulmate” not emit from the conviction that the two have a bond is meant to be?
Or, is there some true, innate, spiritual tie that lies between two people?
Watching the Amazon Prime series “Soulmates” made me reflect on this.
The premise of the show is that people now live in a world with a matchmaking test. A retinal scan is done and then a perfect partner is found for you.
Needless to say, the ramifications of such a test being made available to all are numerous.
Yet each story told (six episodes in all) explores not love, but the condition of each characters soul.
Ultimately, what is laid out for us is that, the desire for that perfect mate can cloud all your judgement and even supersede the so called connection one has with their “soul mate”.
For myself, it was what one of the side characters said that illuminated the truth of why the matchmaking system was powerful and effective.
To paraphrase, “Whereas before, I’d give up at the first sign of impending failure; I now push through and work harder at the relationship, because I now have that assurance that it is meant to be.”
