In particular with regards to my recovery.
So this will be my post updating how my corneal transplant recovery is going. My last review with the transplant surgeon was at the end of February. He was quite pleased with the progress so far. Two stitches that were too tight were removed, the ones at 12 o clock and 6 o clock.
Astigmatism was still present but the intra-ocular pressures were good.
He had said that it would take about two weeks for my vision to change again. So three weeks later i went to see the optometrists to get new spectacles and new lenses.
The astigmatism on my left eye is pretty severe, its 6,5.
The good news is that it will improve over time. The bad news is that I will probably need a number of new lenses over the next year.
My medical insurance covered the first fitting but the rest for the next two years will have to be out of pocket.
The new spectacles took 3 weeks to arrive.
The vision in the left (transplant recipient) eye improved significantly. I was able to read and return to work a week later.
My initial struggle was getting used to having depth perception again.
Walking up stairs or uneven ground needed my full attention.
However, I adjusted. Got past the vertigo.
And now another three weeks later I’m finding that my visual acuity is changing again…
From the information that I have from other corneal transplant recipients, vision will keep on changing even after all the stitches are removed. Which is why the surgeon was recommending LASIK for further correction next year.
The fact that visual acuity and the parameters will keep changing is a bit troublesome, but it’s waaaaay better than what I was dealing with before the operation.
I’m grateful for this gift of visual clarity.
Im grateful for the donor who gave me a cornea.
The sense of hopelessness and cloud of despair that I had around me for the last three years has lifted.
